Welcome

Hi! Thanks so much for stopping by. My name is Darlene Downing and I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I created SpiritsNMotion with a heart-felt desire to share my love of movement with others. I truly believe that when conscious choices are made that support a path of health and well-being,  the unique gifts that belong to all of us are able to shine brightly.  I would love to travel with you on your journey of well-being by sharing Nia, through my scheduled classes and playshops, or to collaborate together to create a unique Nia experience for your group, which I call Nia By Design.

If this is the first time you have heard of Nia, please read on !

What is Nia®?

Created by Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas in 1983, The Nia Technique®  beautifully blends dance, martial, and healing arts, creating a dynamic fitness and lifestyle practice that changes how people experience their body and exercise. While most often practiced in hour-long classes, the true depth of the work lies in a rich body of education that develops into a powerful life practice. With a philosophy rooted in "The Joy of Movement", Nia teaches people of all lifestyles to choose Pleasure as a path toward physical, mental and emotional health.

Revolutionizing the world of fitness and wellbeing, Nia is today taught to nearly 100,000 students by over 2,000 Certified Teachers in 37 countries. With a "More-Gain, No-Pain" philosophy, Nia bursts boundaries of age, gender and fitness levels, delivering a fun, effective and life-changing practice for all walks of life.

  • Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that invites you to deepen your connection to your body, your mind, your emotions, and your spirit.
  • Nia’s philosophy is to seek pleasure through the Joy of Movement.
  • Nia is done barefoot to music and delivers cardiovascular and whole body conditioning. Because Nia is self-guided and based on creating a loving relationship with the body and following “The Body’s Way”—the innate intelligence of the body,  it truly is for everyBODY. It is adaptable and safe for any fitness level, from stiff beginners to highly trained athletes.
  • The heart and soul of Nia is an invitation to choose JOY—to consciously choose pleasure  as you move, in your WHOLE body—your physical body, your mental body, your emotional body, and your spirit.
  • Nia invites you to move in your natural time, in your way—finding your body’s speed and rhythm.
  • Nia is a celebration of the body, inquiry of the mind, and expression of emotion and spirit.
  • Nia is guided by the Pleasure Principle: if the body feels good, accepted and loved, it will naturally become stronger and heal.
